4 Fish Dishes in Ka’u to Top Your Dining Experience
The little-known southern region of Hawaii’s Big Island is largely dominated by beautiful, undeveloped coastlines and if there’s one thing Ka’u is excellent for, it’s the fishing. Virtually anywhere you go along the Ka’u coastline you’ll find pockets of ocean water absolutely teeming with delicious fish of every shape, size, and color. And local restaurant owners know it too, making Ka’u a fantastic place to enjoy a simple, delicious fish dish during your southern Big Island adventures.
1 & 2 – Fish & Chips and the Mixed Plate with Fish at Hana Hou Restaurant
95-1148 Naalehu Spur Rd
Naalehu, HI 96772
Open: Sun – Thurs 8 AM – 7 PM, Fri – Sat 8 AM – 8 PM
Hana Hou Restaurant is one of our favorites in Ka’u, which is why we listed two of their great seafood dishes! Aside from the delectable recipe they’ve concocted for their fish and chips platter, their mixed plate meal with fish combines two different fresh-caught fish with rice and a side of greens, slaw, potato wedges, or macaroni salad. It’s an incredibly tasty way to have locally-caught and prepared fish dishes on the Big Island!
3 – Fish Sandwich at Mehe’s Ka’u Bar and Grill
92-8754 Hawaii Blvd
Ocean View, HI 96737
Open: Sat – Thurs 10 AM – 9 PM, Fri 10 AM – 1:30 AM
Simple, satisfying, and delicious, what’s not to love about Mehe’s Ka’u Bar and Grill’s famous fish sandwich? Fresh-caught, carefully prepared, and served on a plump, day-baked cowboy bun with a side of fries, you’re unlikely to find as good a fish sandwich as you’ll find here.
4 – Coconut Crusted Ahi at Shaka Restaurant
95-5673 Mamalahoa Hwy
Naalehu, HI 96772
Open: Daily 8 AM – 9 PM
Battered in coconut shaving-filled breading and deep-fried to perfection, the coconut crusted ahi at Shaka Restaurant shouldn’t make much of a splash on paper, but in front of you? It’s a whole different story. Crisp, crunchy, and served with rice, lemon, slaw, and tartar sauce, it’s a great option for a quick lunch or dinner.
