Shipman House Cottage

Big Island Guide Travel Guide

Enjoy your morning coffee overlooking a magical sunrise across Hilo Bay while staying at the Victorian-era Shipman House Cottage. Moored in Hawaiian history, this cottage was first built back in 1910 for the guests of the W.H. Shipman family – before hotels were commonplace in this part of Hawaii. Renowned author Jack London and his spouse once stayed at the main house. Guests of the literary persuasion can opt to sleep under the very same headboard.

Antique furnishings provide old world charm while guests enjoy modern amenities like free Wifi and queen-size beds. There are two airy guest units made available to be rented individually. Each room comes with individual bathrooms, small refrigerator, tea kettle, coffee maker and separate entrances.

Situated in the historic neighborhood of Reed’s Island, the Guest Cottage is just a wooden bridge away from Downtown Hilo. Surrounded by mango trees, bamboo and palms, the cottages’s tropical feel transports guests to another world complete with nature’s very own soundtrack of birds twittering at daybreak and frogs croaking at dusk.

In the mood to rejoin civilization? Restaurants, stores and museums are a 10 minute walk away! Local attractions include hikes, tropical zoo, waterfalls, botanical gardens and guided tours of dormant volcanoes. The friendly hosts run the place with great care, and are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the local history. They ran the main home as a B&B for 20 years.
