Uncle’s Awa Club and Hoolaulea Farmers Market
Puna is the perfect place to explore off the beaten path and experience a nice flavor of local life at the Ho’olaule’a Farmers Market.
At the top of Holualoa Road you will find the Kimura Lauhala Shop. The word Lau means “leaf” in the Hawaiian language, so Lauhala refers to the leaves of the Hala Tree. Housed in the location of the town’s former general store, this shop was first exposed to Lauhala as a bartering tool used in trade.
After that introduction, the Kimura family became interested in the technique of weaving this hearty plant and today their shop has multiple renderings of this fine craft: eyeglass cases, purses, floor mats, slippers, baskets and even stylish hats for both men and women. If you are seeking custom-fit hats or that specialty hand-made gift, stop in at The Kimura Lauhala Shop where the Kimura family’s legacy (since 1914) still lives on for both locals and visitors to appreciate.
