Kona Inn Shopping Village Overview

Located along the picturesque waterfront along Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona, the Kona Inn Shopping Village provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy a leisurely walk amid shops, galleries, and boutiques for Hawaiian gifts and souvenirs.

History

The Kona Inn originally built in 1928, by the Inter-Island Steamship Navigation Company, was the beginning of commercial tourism in Kona. In its heyday, the 20-room hotel was always booked with visitors, catering to the leisurely wealthy with its salt water swimming pool, tennis courts, and cocktail lounge, once known for the best luau in town with unbeatable ocean views. You can always stop in and see the gorgeous sunsets from their front lawn, just pass through the walkway in the middle of the shopping center and stroll over to the sea wall for a nice sunset view, overlooking Kailua Bay.

The hotel stopped housing guests in 1976 and became Kona Inn Shopping Village in 1980.

With its wooden boardwalk and almost an arcade-like feel, the original hotel has been converted into a historic shopping village with two restaurants: The Kona Inn and Kona Canoe Club Restaurants still offer those relaxing oceanfront views, appetizers and great Mai Tai’s during Happy Hour make for a special treat when a spectacular sunset is in the works.

A variety of clothing stores, gift shops, artisan galleries, jewelry stores, surf shops, a henna tattoo parlor, and snack and coffee shops fill this popular shopping destination. If you’re strolling through Kailua-Kona’s down town, you can’t miss the lively Kona Inn Shopping Village.
