Puna is host to several large Farmers Markets offering up some of the island’s best produce, delicious cuisine and handmade crafts.
Keauhou Shopping Center Overview
If you want to escape the resort for some local flavor and pick up a few necessities, check out the Keauhou Shopping Center. This shopping center features a collection of local, national, and one-of-a-kind stores, restaurants and services, making it a great destination for residents and visitors.
Popular stores such as Longs Drugs and KTA Super Stores, an Urgent Care Center, as well as a movie theatre and a Post Office all contribute to the conveniences offered in this South Kona shopping haven. It’s also very convenient to stop in for a bit before or after boat tours that leave from nearby Keauhou Bay.
Sunset Kai Lanai, Kenichi Pacific, Tropic’s Tap House and Habanero’s are amongst the Center’s many dining options. Regal Cinemas 7 features comfortable stadium seating and is the only theater in Kona to serve alcohol.
Every Saturday from 8:00 am-12:00 pm the Keauhou Farmer’s Market brings local producers together to offer fresh produce, meat and eggs as well as delicious honey, fresh flowers, Kona coffee, macadamia nuts, and a variety of handmade items such as breads and jams. This Farmer’s market prides itself on offering 100% Hawaii grown and produced items.
As the heart of this little community, the center sponsors numerous events and activities, including concerts, crafts, cultural shows and displays. Including a small cultural museum that explains the sport of he’e holua or land sledding, where ancient Hawaiian royalty participated in a death defying sledding competition down the mountain face on a wooden sled.
The sledding took place on a track laid with stones and then covered over with slick grass and leaves. The remains of one of these sledding tracks, Ka Holua O Kaneaka, is still visible on the mountain just south of the Keauhou Shopping Center today.
