Stay Near Magic Sands Beach in Kona

Big Island Guide Travel Guide

South of downtown Kailua-Kona is a remarkable beach cove that’s attracted generations of visitors to Hawaii’s Big Island: Magic Sands Beach. Also known as White Sands Beach and Disappearing Sands Beach, this tropical paradise is best suited for swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, picnics, and snorkeling. It’s also one of the most convenient in-town beaches on the island, stretching along Alii Drive and offering unchecked views of the Pacific ocean from white, sandy shores to the shade below towering palm trees.

It’s natural to want to stay near a beach during a Hawaiian vacation, but there are plenty of reasons why you would place Magic Sands Beach near the top of your list when considering a place to stay, especially if you want to be in town and on the beach, a rare combo.

Instant Access
The name “Magic Sands” is given for a reason: the surf will occasionally pull the sand off the beach, exposing a layer of lava rock below and taking everything along with it. It’s extremely common in the winter months when the surf is stronger, so staying abreast of safety warnings at this beach is highly recommended. But staying within view of the beach is a big advantage to staying aware of the beach’s condition and securing a great beach spot. Being able to wander down to the beach anytime you want really can’t be beaten.

Plenty of Activities
On top of swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and other water activities, there’s a beach volleyball net nearby that makes for great fun. This is a favorite beach among locals who live nearby so it’s a great place to chat with a local and get some insight into the local scene. The expansive beachfront means there’s usually plenty of room to spread out and have a BBQ, picnic, or sunbathing session when the water gets the best of you. Just don’t forget the sunscreen.

Nearby Restaurants and Bars
After a day on the beach, there’s nothing like a hearty meal and a cold cocktail to refresh and relax you. Thankfully, the beach’s proximity to Kailua-Kona and the resort-heavy establishments there mean there’s no shortage of excellent dining options within walking distance of Magic Sands and (hopefully) your hotel or rental.
