South of downtown Kailua-Kona is a remarkable beach cove that’s attracted generations of visitors to Hawaii’s Big Island: Magic Sands Beach. Also known as White Sands Beach and Disappearing Sands Beach, this tropical paradise is best suited for swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, picnics, and snorkeling. It’s also one of the most convenient in-town beaches on the island, stretching along Alii Drive and offering unchecked views of the Pacific ocean from white, sandy shores to the shade below towering palm trees.

The name “Magic Sands” is given for a reason: the surf will occasionally pull the sand off the beach, exposing a layer of lava rock below and taking everything along with it. It’s extremely common in the winter months when the surf is stronger, so staying abreast of safety warnings at this beach is highly recommended. But staying within view of the beach is a big advantage to staying aware of the beach’s condition and securing a great beach spot.
